Wayne State University, also referred to as simply WSU, is a public research university located in Detroit, which is the seat of Wayne County and the largest city in the US state of Michigan, having a population estimated at a number of more than 900 000 inhabitants, during the 2009 census, fact which also makes it the 11th most populous city in USA.
WSU was established in 1868, as the Detroit Medical College, which is today one of the university's components - School of Medicine. The institution adopted its current name in 1956, when it became a constitutionally established university, through the Michigan Constitution in 1959. Since then, the university has continuously grown, currently having a student enrollment approximated at a total number of more than 31 000.
Wayne State is academically organized into 13 schools and colleges, through which it offers more than 350 major subject areas. It is the 3rd largest university in the state and is a notable engine in metro Detroit's educational, cultural, and economic landscape, due to its 75-acre research and technology park, and for the fact that it annually hosts the Detroit Festival of the Arts.
The athletic teams from Wayne State University are known as the Wayne State Warriors, who compete in NCAA Division II, in the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC), in various sports, for both men and women, including in NCAA Division I level in the College Hockey America (CHA), for ice hockey. The Warriors are, perhaps, best known for their men and women fencing teams, which have won 11 NCAA Championships, between '75 and '89.
The distinctive colors of the Wayne State Warriors are green and gold.
Among the most noteworthy names, on the list of notable WSU alumni, there are: Arthur Danto - Emeritus Johnsonian Professor of Philosophy at Columbia University, Saul K.
